Club Africain opened its 2026 Basketball Africa League campaign with the kind of victory that can set the tone for an entire conference, grinding out an 85-79 win over ASC Ville de Dakar on the opening day of the Sahara Conference in Rabat.

From the opening tip, the Tunisian side imposed its rhythm. Club Africain surged to a 25-18 first-quarter lead, fueled by disciplined half-court execution and a physical interior presence that immediately unsettled the Senegalese champions. That seven-point cushion would prove crucial in a game where every other quarter ended level or narrowly contested.

The game was won early in control, but preserved late in composure.

Club Africain’s offensive identity was balanced rather than explosive. Instead of relying on one dominant scorer, they attacked through multiple options, sharing the ball well and making timely reads against Dakar’s defensive pressure. Their efficiency in the paint and their ability to convert key possessions in transition gave them a steady offensive pulse.

What stood out most was Club Africain’s maturity whenever ASC Ville de Dakar threatened a comeback.

The Senegalese side repeatedly made runs, particularly in the third and fourth quarters, trimming deficits and injecting momentum into the contest. But each push was answered. Whether through a timely basket, a second-chance opportunity, or calm free-throw execution, Club Africain refused to surrender control.

That resilience became the story of the night.

The rebounding battle played a major role in the outcome. Club Africain consistently generated extra possessions, especially in key stretches when Dakar looked ready to swing momentum. Those possessions often translated into points or, just as importantly, drained time and energy from the opposition.

Defensively, Club Africain’s work was equally decisive. They disrupted ASC Ville de Dakar’s offensive flow by crowding driving lanes and contesting shots without losing structure. Dakar found moments of rhythm, particularly through aggressive penetration and transition opportunities, but they were rarely allowed sustained offensive comfort.

Perhaps the defining stretch came in the final minutes.

With the game tightening and Dakar within striking distance, Club Africain executed like a veteran group. Their late-game decision-making—getting to the line, valuing possessions, and making smart defensive switches—turned pressure into poise. It was not a flashy finish, but it was the kind championship teams often produce.

The quarter breakdown reflected that consistency: Club Africain won the first 25-18, matched Dakar 19-19 in the second, edged the third 20-21 while maintaining control, and traded evenly at 21-21 in the fourth to secure the six-point victory.

For ASC Ville de Dakar, there were positives despite the loss. Their fight level remained high, and their second-half response showed why they remain dangerous in the Sahara Conference. But defensive lapses in the opening quarter and missed opportunities in closing stretches proved costly.

For Club Africain, this was more than a win—it was a statement.

Jesse Jones Jr and Omar Abada combined 42 points to seal the opening victory.

Opening games in BAL often reveal a team’s identity. Club Africain showed toughness, structure, and the ability to absorb pressure without panic. In a conference expected to be fiercely competitive, those traits matter as much as talent.

If this performance is a preview of what’s to come, Club Africain has announced itself not simply as a participant in BAL 2026, but as a serious contender. And in Rabat, that campaign began with a hard-earned, convincing first step.
