Metu Proved Vital for Nigeria as Guinea sealed Second Round Spot in African Qualifiers Roundup

Nigeria breathed new life into its FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 qualifying campaign after edging Tunisia 84-81 in a thrilling Group C encounter as the third qualification window tipped off in Luanda, Angola.

The victory marked a winning competitive debut for newly appointed D'Tigers head coach David Fizdale, whose rebuilt squad avenged November's overtime defeat to the Tunisians and reignited Nigeria's hopes of reaching the next round. The D'Tigers arrived in Luanda with a 1-2 record and questionable chances of advancing far in the African Qualifiers.

D'Tigers started brightly, taking the opening quarter 23-21 before Tunisia responded to claim the second period 23-20 and send the game into halftime level. Nigeria regained control after the break, winning the third quarter 21-19 before producing another composed defensive display in the closing stages to edge the fourth quarter 20-18 and seal a crucial three-point victory.

One of the biggest talking points was the transformation of the Nigerian side. Eleven new players featured for D'Tigers compared to the squad that faced Tunisia in the previous window, and the fresh-look team forced the North Africans into 19 turnovers, a statistic that proved decisive down the stretch.

Chimezie Metu and Ike Iroegbu led Nigeria's offense with 17 points apiece, while Metu added 7 rebounds and 2 assists in an outstanding all-round performance, Iroegbu added 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. Wes Iwundu contributed 14 points, and Uche Iroegbu chipped in with 13 points and 6 assists as D'Tigers earned one of their biggest wins of the campaign.

For Tunisia, Omar Abada finished with a game-high 21 points, 6 rebounds, and 8 assists.

There were 9 lead changes in the game but Tunisia held the largest lead of the game at 8 points in the second quarter. Nigeria’s biggest advantage was 6 points, reached twice in the fourth quarter.

Speaking after the game, Fizdale praised his team's character but insisted there is still plenty of room for improvement.

"Our collective toughness and physicality down the stretch won us the game," he said.

The former NBA head coach also revealed that several Nigerian players currently in the NBA have expressed interest in representing D'Tigers in future qualification windows, describing the current squad as the foundation of a team capable of competing at the highest level.

Tunisia coach Adel Tlatli admitted his side had come up against a vastly improved Nigerian team.

"This is not the same team we defeated seven months ago, they could have ten different rosters," he acknowledged after the contest.

Elsewhere in Group C, Guinea strengthened its grip on top spot with a commanding 89-63 victory over Rwanda. The West Africans maintained their unbeaten record and officially secured a place in the second round of the African Qualifiers after improving to 4-0. Guinea took control after halftime with a dominant second-half display, leaving Rwanda still searching for its first win of the campaign.

Ousmane Drame was the top performer in the game as he registered 16 points, 7 rebounds, and a game-high +37 efficiency in the brilliant display by the West Africans also in Luanda. Souleymane Boum Jr added 17 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists, Sekou Doumbouya contributed 14 points and 6 assists as well while for Rwanda, Justin Uwitonze led the way with 17 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists.

Guinea seized control before halftime and steadily pulled away after the break with the pivotal moment arriving late in the second quarter. With 52 seconds left, Cadeau de Dieu Furaha tied the game at 41-41 and in the third quarter, Guinea outscored Rwanda 14-4 as they converted all five of their free throws, and committed only one turnover to put them firmly in the driver’s seat.

Following Thursday's results, Guinea lead Group C with a perfect 4-0 record, while Nigeria and Tunisia are tied at 2-2, setting up a fierce battle for the remaining qualification spot. Rwanda remained winless at 0-4.

Attention now turns to Friday's headline fixture as Nigeria take on unbeaten Guinea in a contest that could prove decisive in D'Tigers' qualification ambitions. Tunisia will also face Rwanda, with both teams looking to strengthen their positions before Sunday's final round of first-round fixtures.
