Nigeria's Junior D'Tigers failed to register a win in the group phase, and the disappointing campaign will see them miss out on a chance to feature at the Junior World Cup in what could be described as a systemic failure.

There's a particular kind of quiet that settles over a team when a tournament stops being about winning a title and starts being about finishing it. That's where Nigeria's Junior D'Tigers find themselves this week in Abidjan, after three group games at the FIBA U18 AfroBasket produced three losses and an early exit from the medal picture. For a team with six continental titles to its name, this isn't just a bad week. It's the kind of result that gets talked about back home for a long time.
By the time Nigeria arrived in Côte d'Ivoire, the roster had already been cut in half. Five of the twelve players originally named for the trip failed FIBA's age-verification checks and were sent home before the tournament began. What was meant to be a title defense turned into a scramble just to field a team and the country went on to open the tournament with seven players.
The opener was always going to be hard, and short-handed against a full Egyptian squad, Nigeria hung in for a half before the legs gave out. Six Egyptians finished in double figures. Nigeria turned the ball over 23 times — the kind of number that tells you a team is running on fumes, not talent.
Two reinforcements arrived in time for the Chad game, and for a while it looked like it might matter. Nigeria led by one after the first quarter in a tight, cagey battle. Then Chad found a rhythm in the second, a big three-pointer put them up six at the half, and Nigeria never quite clawed it back. For Chad, it was a first win at the tournament. For Nigeria, it was a second straight loss, and the writing was on the wall.
Needing a win just to keep hope alive, Nigeria actually led after the first quarter, 21-17, in front of a home Ivorian crowd that had every reason to expect the opposite. But the hosts settled in before halftime, took the lead, and never let go. Côte d'Ivoire finished the group stage 3-0. Nigeria finished it 0-3.
If there's one name Nigerian basketball fans should remember from this tournament, it's Victor Sunday. While everything around him fell apart, he didn't. Against Côte d'Ivoire he put up 19 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, that appears like a near triple-double in a losing effort. Isaiah John chipped in 14, with Olakunle Aribo and Emmanuel Oshiobugie Idornigie adding 13 and 10 respectively. It wasn't enough to change the results. But it was the one thread of consistency in a campaign that had almost none.
Nigeria will now settle for classification games in Abidjan. That is really disappointing for a team that came in with real ambitions of ending a title drought stretching back to 2006. Instead of a quarterfinal and a shot at qualifying for the 2027 FIBA U19 World Cup in Czechia, the Junior D'Tigers will spend the rest of the tournament playing for pride and positioning, well outside the conversation that matters most.
The bigger questions about how a squad ends up half-eligible days before a continental championship, and what that says about the pipeline behind it will likely follow the team home.
