FUS Rabat off to flying start as Harouna reaches historic milestone

FUS Rabat drew on its championship DNA to open with authority, overpowering JCA Kings Côte d’Ivoire 85–55 in Rabat, at the Salle Omnisports Moulay Abdellah. Against a side playing its first game, FUS set a relentless tone : defensively sharp, physically imposing, and in full control from start to finish.

The night, however, carried an added layer of history. In the flow of a one-sided contest, Abdoulaye Harouna quietly etched his name into the BAL record books, becoming the first player to reach the 500-point milestone.

On the court, FUS imposed its will early. Defensive pressure disrupted JCA’s rhythm, forcing 20 turnovers and converting them into 21 points. The hosts paired that with disciplined execution on the other end, committing just eight turnovers themselves—a gap that reflected the difference in structure and composure between the two sides.

“The key was defense. A team that wins titles is a team that defends well,” said head coach Said El Bouzidi. “We weren’t good offensively, but the opponent had 20 turnovers and we had 8. We played with intensity. In close games, free throws make the difference. We’ll work more on defensive discipline. We’ll stay aggressive.”

That defensive identity translated into control of the paint. FUS dominated the glass with 21 offensive rebounds, turning second-chance opportunities into 23 points. JCA, still finding its footing at this level, struggled to contain the physicality and could not sustain stops long enough to build momentum.

Offensively, the Moroccan side remained efficient where it mattered most, shooting 53 percent from two-point range. The ball moved with purpose (16 assists), and the depth of the roster ensured the pressure never eased. The bench alone accounted for 49 points, underlining the team’s balance and rotation strength.

Anthony Pritchard led the second unit with 13 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Abdelhakim Zouita added 13 points before exiting with an apparent injury concern. His early departure briefly cast a shadow over an otherwise dominant performance, but Bouzidi was quick to reassure.

“I don’t think it will be serious. He will be treated and should be with us for the next game.”

Inside, Mouhamadou Diagne anchored the effort with authority, finishing with 10 points and 16 rebounds, setting the physical tone that defined the contest. Harouna, beyond his historic milestone, contributed within the collective framework of a team that never needed to force the issue.

For JCA Kings, the evening served as a stark introduction. Jonathan Cissé led with 13 points, while Babatunde William added eight points and 10 rebounds, but the lack of cohesion and offensive fluidity proved costly. With just four assists as a team, their possessions often dissolved into isolation plays under defensive pressure.

As the final buzzer echoed through the Rabat arena, the contrast was unmistakable. FUS Rabat, backed by experience and identity, delivered a performance of control and intent. JCA Kings, stepping onto the BAL stage for the first time, were left with a clear measure of the level required—where defense dictates, discipline defines outcomes, and history, as Harouna showed, is written quietly within the game.
