Al Ahli SC Clinches BAL Playoff Spot After 104-91 Thriller Against Nairobi City Thunder

Al Ahli SC became the first team in the 2025 Nile Conference to secure a spot in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) Season 5 playoffs after a high-octane 104-91 win over the Nairobi City Thunders. The Libyan champions made a resounding statement of intent in a game marked by elite scoring, defensive breakdowns, and fierce resilience.

From the opening tip-off, Al Ahli set the tone. Their aggressive start saw them surge to a 15-point lead by halftime, 56-41, powered by a fast-paced offense and sharp ball movement. Yet, the City Thunders—making their BAL debut this season—refused to back down. The Kenyan side, led by their Nigerian floor general Uche Iroegbu, put together a valiant fight in the second half.

Iroegbu showcased his scoring prowess with 23 points, while Albert Odero (17), Tylor Ongwae Okari (12), and Evans Ganapamo (10) all hit double digits. Their effort kept the Thunders within striking distance for much of the game, turning it into a thrilling shootout.

However, Al Ahli’s depth and offensive firepower proved too much. Senegalese guard Jean Jacques Boissy was unstoppable, dropping 26 points and controlling the tempo.

We want to keep playing every game as if it was a final.

Boissy said postgame—a mindset that was clearly on display.

Mohamed Sadi was equally dominant, recording a double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Caleb Agada also joined the double-double club, contributing 16 points and 10 rebounds. Deon Thompson and Jaylen Adams rounded out the offensive assault with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Al Ahli’s combination of experience, athleticism, and ruthless execution on both ends of the floor made the difference. Their ability to adapt to Nairobi’s second-half surge while maintaining scoring consistency highlighted why they are considered one of the favorites in this year’s tournament.

The victory secures their place in the playoffs and sends a warning to the rest of the BAL field—Al Ahli SC is not just here to compete; they are here to dominate. With every player locked in and their eyes on the title, this Libyan powerhouse is shaping to be a serious contender in Kigali.
