Pascal Siakam led the Indiana Pacers to their first NBA Finals appearance since 2000, clinching the 2025 Eastern Conference Finals MVP award. In Game 6, Siakam notched 31 points, guiding the Pacers to a 125-108 victory over the New York Knicks and sealing the series 4-2.
Siakam averaged 25.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.3 assists during the six-game stretch, demonstrating the leadership, composure, and playoff experience the Midwest franchise thought he would bring to the team when they traded for the three-time NBA All-Star last season.
Siakam's championship chops date back to his 2019 NBA championship title win with the Toronto Raptors, playing alongside and under the tutelage of Kawhi Leonard.
Indiana's route to the Finals saw them beat the fifth-seeded Milwaukee Bucks and the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers, with Siakam's veteran presence complementing the dynamic play of Tyrese Haliburton.
However, Haliburton, who averaged 21.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 7.5 assists during the series, often made the headlines for his outrageous celebrations against the Knicks and after it was revealed that he had been voted as the Most Overrated player in the NBA.
Indiana is now poised to face the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Finals, marking a matchup between two small-market teams. The Thunder, spearheaded by league MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, have also put together a 12-4 postseason record.
Siakam's success in the 2025 NBA Eastern Finals is likely to spark renewed interest in his possible involvement with the Cameroon national team at the upcoming 2025 FIBA Men's AfroBasket in Angola. Siakam was initially named to Cameroon's preliminary squad for the 2024 Olympic Qualifying Tournament, but he was unable to commit due to his free agency.
As one of the NBA's most prominent African players, Siakam is a role model for aspiring athletes across the continent. His championship and current Eastern Finals MVP achievements will have a lasting impact on Africans, whether they're players, coaches, or front-office executives in the NBA, WNBA, Basketball Africa League, and other professional basketball leagues worldwide.
As the NBA Finals get underway, all eyes will be on Siakam, Haliburton, and the Pacers as they pursue their first-ever championship and strive to complete the journey that their Pacers legend, Reggie Miller, was unable to achieve.
