Munali Suns Storm Into the Elite 16 With Flawless Road to BAL Campaign

‍

The Zambian side delivered another commanding performanceon home soil, combining offensive efficiency, defensive discipline and collective determination to leave no doubt about their ambitions in the competition. With an unbeaten run behind them, the Suns head into the next phase looking like a team ready to challenge the continent’s best.

Leading the offensive charge was Jared Mweetwa, who produced an outstanding 20-point performance to spearhead the Suns’ attack. Mweetwa proved difficult to contain throughout the contest, providing the scoring punch his team needed to maintain control and build a comfortable winning margin.

However, Munali’s success was not built on individual brilliance alone. Their ability to convert opportunities from the free-throw line played a significant role in the outcome. Shooting an impressive 72 percent from the charity stripe, the Suns demonstrated composure when presented with scoring opportunities, ensuring that Soweto Panthers were unable to capitalize on missed chances.

At the other end of the floor, Munali showcased the defensive identity that has characterized their impressive campaign. Their aggressive defensive approach disrupted Soweto’s offensive rhythm, forced costly mistakes and translated defensive stops into points. The Suns scored 21 points off turnovers, underlining their ability to punish opponents for every lapse in concentration.

The defensive pressure was particularly telling against a Soweto Panthers team that struggled to find consistent offensive contributions. Only two Panthers players managed to reach double figures, with Latrell Jones leading the way with 15 points, while Keanu Gumede added 11.

Despite their efforts, the South African side found it difficult to establish an offensive rhythm against a Munali defense that remained disciplined and organized. The limited scoring contributions from the Panthers’ roster ultimately made the challenge of overturning the deficit even more difficult.

For Munali Suns, the victory also featured another significant individual contribution from Douglas Kandulu, whose double-double performance highlighted his importance to the team’s success. His presence on both ends of the court provided the Suns with an additional dimension, reinforcing the collective strength that has made them such a formidable opponent.

The 80–60 result was more than just another victory. It was a statement of intent from a Munali Suns team that has consistently demonstrated its ability to compete, execute and deliver when it matters most.

Completing the Road to BAL campaign without a defeat is no small achievement. It reflects the team’s consistency, preparation and growing confidence as they prepare for the greater challenge awaiting them in the Elite 16.

With Jared Mweetwa providing the offensive firepower, Douglas Kandulu delivering inside and the entire team embracing a defensive-first mentality, Munali Suns have established themselves as a side that future opponents cannot afford to underestimate.

The Elite 16 now beckons, and if their flawless qualifying campaign is anything to go by, Munali Suns are not travelling to the next stage simply to participate. They are arriving with ambition, momentum and a clear message: the Suns are ready to shine on the continental stage.
