In a tightly contested battle that gradually slipped away, Cameroon fell to France 50-75 in their opening game of the FIBA U19 World Cup. While the 25-point final margin tells a story of dominance, the early stages of the game painted a different picture — one of grit, energy, and fierce competition.

Cameroon came out swinging, unfazed by the European powerhouse. They pushed the pace early, with Frank Belibi and Gideon Bassong setting the tone on both ends of the floor. Cameroon held the upper hand in the opening minutes, forcing turnovers and feeding off defensive energy to lead the scoreboard briefly.

However, France responded with composure. A trio of offensive threats — Talis Soulhac, Fodzo Dada, and Noa Kouakou — proved to be too much as the game progressed. Soulhac led the French attack with 16 points, constantly probing the defense and finishing through contact.

Dada added 15 with a flurry of mid-range jumpers and transition buckets, while Kouakou chipped in 14 points, including crucial three-pointers that stretched the Cameroonian defense thin.

From the second quarter onward, France began to assert control. Their ability to capitalize on opportunities and maintain composure during key possessions separated them from their African counterparts.

Despite the game being played at an equal level in terms of athleticism and hustle, France’s superior decision-making and shot selection began to widen the gap. For Cameroon, the second half was a frustrating display of missed opportunities.

While Belibi and Bassong continued to battle, each scoring 15 points and keeping the fight alive, the team struggled to contain France’s versatile offense. Cameroon’s transition defense faltered, and their offense became stagnant under increased pressure.

Yet, it wasn’t a performance without heart. Even as the scoreboard tilted in France’s favor, the Cameroonian squad showed no signs of folding. Their resilience, especially in the third quarter, saw them cut the lead to within ten points before France responded with a run that ultimately put the game out of reach.

Cameroon’s head coach emphasized post-game that the loss, though disappointing, was part of the learning curve for a team still finding its rhythm on the world stage
.
With this opening loss, Cameroon begins their U19 campaign on a tough note. However, all is not lost. Their path to the Round of 16 remains open, and the fight shown in this first test proves that they are capable of bouncing back.

As for France, they look every bit the title contender, combining depth, discipline, and decisive execution. Their performance sets a strong tone as the group stage continues.

Cameroon’s next matchup against Australia will be crucial — both for morale and their hopes of advancing. If today’s spirit is anything to go by, they will be ready.
